‘The Cockroach War’ by Jonathan Harlen

cockroach warThe book I have read is a wonderful book with a funny side to it. The author of this book is Jonathan Harlen. He has done a great job putting such a funny book together. This book is recommended to people who have a sense of humor or just want a laugh. “Cockroach War” is about two families who were great friends at the start until things changed. The Cadwalladers won the lotto and became very wealthy and a little stuck up. This book is mostly set around the neighbourhood of the two families. The two families are very different.  Emma, Toby and their parents belong to the Judge family and Dick, Beverly and their children belong to the Cadwallader family.  These two families live in a beautiful neighbourhood with a stream and a great view but then things change…..The Cadwalladers win the lotto of a lifetime. My favorite character is Emma as she is very creative and my least favourite character is Dick as once he becomes rich he doesn’t care about anyone else and is very selfish. There are no pictures in this book but that doesn’t really matter. While your reading this book the pictures automatically appear in you head. All up this book is really good. You will love it all. It is an enjoyable book where you can have a laugh all through it. This book would be rated at least 10 as it has all the good features. ‘Cockroach war’ is a wonderful book because it makes you really think. Carlie, Year 8

‘The Cockroach War’ is a comedy written by Jonathan Harlen. Unfortunately there is no illustrator but I would still like to see the picture because they would be very humorous. It is an extraordinary book and it is also very compelling. The book is set in 1995 in a lovely neighborhood called Dagenham. The setting of the book does not play a very big part. It is not very convincing. The characters seem very real but not consistent. Emma and Toby Judge, Dick and Beverly Cadwalladers are the characters that stood out over the rest. Come meet the neighbours from hell! The Cadwalladers win 40 million big ones from the lottery ticket. They become selfish, upgrading their house and buying things they don’t need. I personally like the book because it is funny and great for if you’re looking for a good laugh. The highlight of the story is when the Cadwalladers become rich and brag about it. I would recommend this book to 12 and up. I give it 4 stars. Erin, Year 8

‘Don’t Call me Ishmael’ by Michael Gerard Bauer

Don't call me ishmaelThis story is about a St Daniels’ Year Niner, whose problems all come from his name: Ishmael Leseur. Ishmael was named after the great Ishmael in Moby Dick but can he live up to his name? In the story there is bullying and friendship, good times and bad, love and hate, and learning to stand up to your fears.  I liked this book a lot because in some ways I could relate to what he went through. It was also good because the characters were funny, there was love and there was pain, typical high school life. I would recommend this story to teenagers particularly boys, but girls would like it too. Ciara, Year 8

‘Alex Jackson: Grommet’ by Pat Flynn

alex jackson grommetI think that the book, “Alex Jackson, Grommet” is funny and interesting. I don’t really like reading, but the book was really good and I finished it easily. I think that the book would be even better if there was more drama. Overall I really liked the book and I think that it can relate to a lot of young readers. Amber, Year 8

I really enjoyed the book ‘Alex Jackson, Grommet’ as it was funny interesting and it really showed the personality of Alex Jackson. I’m not much of a reader but I really enjoyed this book. The book could have a bit more action and drama. I loved the story because it was a love story which most girls would like, Action which boys would like and Drama which anyone would really like. Overall I think the story was really great and I would recommend it to anyone. Kalani, Year 8

I enjoyed reading the book ‘Alex Jackson: Grommet’ written by Pat Flynn. This book is about a 13 year old boy called Alex Jackson and he has just started high school in Beeton. Alex can pull moves on a board that other kids only dream of. But when it comes to popularity he doesn’t really fit into that category. Alex also has to learn how to stand up to the school bully, and learn how to get the girls. Alex might be in for a bit of trouble but he’s going to do what he does best and ride along the whole way. By Tayla year 8

I am always curious about people that keep to themselves and Becky fitted that charactor perfectly. From the start I knew something was up; she was always keeping to herself and seemed to be consistently sad. She was diffrent from the other characters…she had a secret. However even after she was ‘going out’ with Alex Jackson she still did not share it, but in fact , he already knew it. Once I started reading ‘Alex Jackson: Grommet’ I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. I enjoyed this book, epecially because it was written about young people so I could relate it to my own life. I would recommend this fast paced, easy read to any one aged 12-14 years. by Mythra, year 8

‘Mac Slater, Cool Hunter 1: The Rules of Cool’ by Tristan Bancks

mac slater 1I don’t usually read, and my friends always say I need to read, but when I picked up ‘Mac Slater Cool Hunter’ I could not put it down. It was so good that I got the second book. The book is mainly about two best friends who are completely different. They like to invent things, so when they create a flying bike they crash, but then a man comes over and asks to enter them in a competition called ‘cool hunters’ and the winner goes to New York with five other people to look for things cool and catch it on camera. But if you want to know the rest you will have to read it. It was an amazing book and I could not put it down. I suggest everyone who loves action and comedy should read this book because every time I get bored I say to myself books are just like TV in your mind and this great book is more like an addictive show more than a book. This book was a bit hard to get at the start but once I got to page 20 I started to get it more and the more I read on the more it becomes great. I love it. Luc, year 8

‘Mac Slater Cool Hunter’ is a book about two guys called Mac and Paul who like inventing stuff like flying bikes. Mac gets asked to compete against this girl called Cat to try and be a Cool Hunter. They have to blog what they think is cool for five days. On the last day Mac and Paul decide to try and get their flying bike in the sky and film that to put in the blog. You’ll have to read the book to find out what happens. By Jesse, Year 8

Hi my name is Christian and this is my blog about ‘Mac Slater, coolhunters!’ I don’t like reading but I thought that this book was actually good. The book is about two boys that invent things. At the start of the book they invent a flying bike that doesn’t work, then they enter a competition to become a coolhunter. I would definitely recommend this book to other people because it’s a good book and I had fun reading it. Chris, Year 8 http://www.tristanbancks.com/

‘Don’t Call Me Ishmael’ – reviews and author comments

Michael bauerHi to everyone at Aquinas College!
Michael Bauer here and I’ve been asked to tell you a little bit about my book Don’t Call Me Ishmael!
I guess the first thing I could tell you is that the whole story started because I had an image from the old movie Moby Dick on the noticeboard beside my desk where I work. It showed Captain Ahab (actor Gregory Peck) on the side of the great white whale. When I looked at that picture one day (while I was still trying to write my first novel The Running Man) I thought of the famous opening line of Herman Melville’s book Moby Dick which is “Call me Ishmael.”
Then for some reason I imagined a boy saying the opposite, “Don’t call me Ishmael”. I started to wonder who that boy was and how he got the name Ishmael and why he didn’t like his name and that’s how the whole story began. It’s weird to think that if I didn’t have that picture on my noticeboard I probably wouldn’t have written the Ishmael stories. All my books have started like that – from little thoughts or ideas that have made me wonder and ask questions.
I really enjoyed writing Ishmael and the sequel Ishmael and the Return of the Dugongs. The characters seem very real to me and I like how they have very different personalities so I get to write and say things that I normally wouldn’t – particularly when I’m writing as Razza! All the boys in the story were based on ‘types’ of boys I’d known when I was a teacher. James Scobie was the only one who started out based on a particular boy, although he ended up quite different in the novel.
I based Ishmael a little bit on me. I really hated speaking in front of the class or groups of people when I was at school just like he does. I didn’t get over that until I was at university and I got more confidence. Sadly I also had more than my fair share of unrequited love like Ishmael does with Kelly Faulkner! Some things that happen to Ishmael in the book are similar to things that have happened to me – like fainting before an audience (more than once!) and strange incidents with pegs! If I ever visit Aquinas I’ll tell you all about those.
One of the more unusual things about the Ishmael books is that my son Joe designed and created both covers. He did the first one when he was in Grade 12. He does all the art work and makes all the props (like the Ringo peg doll) and takes the photos. If you look on the front cover of Ishmael you can see a symbol representing Joe’s initials just above Ringo’s head. You should be able to find it on the Dugong’s cover as well. Also check out the picture of the band on the Dugong’s cover. One of the Dugongs is me. Of course I’m a bit hard to recognise because I’m quite a bit younger in the photo and purple!
At the moment I’m writing a third and final Ishmael story which will cover grades 11 and 12 and get the boys all the way through school. It will be a sad day for me when I write the final page. I’ll really miss those guys!
Anyway if you do read Don’t Call Me Ishmael! I hope  gives you a few laughs and maybe something to think about after you’re done.
Cheers
Michael
ps In Chapter 3 Thar She Blows it mentions that the date of Ishmael’s birth is August 1st. Ishmael has the same birthday as someone famous who is mentioned in the novel. Can you guess or google who?

Don't call me ishmaelI’m about half way through the book and it is very interesting and funny. My favourite part of it so far is when Barry Bagsley and his gang put insects and spiders in James Scobie’s desk. When James opened his desk all the insects and spiders came out and went crawling through the room. Things were flying around the room and people were screaming but James was sitting in his chair and didn’t even move when they came out. I suggest you should read this if you really enjoy a funny book. It has a lot of quotes from Moby Dick. It is very interesting and I suggest you read it. Alana, Year 8.

‘Don’t call me Ishmael’ is definitely a comedy book which I would recommend to someone if you are into a joke. At the start of the book it was a bit hard to understand but as I got up to about Chapter 6 it started making a bit more sense. The story is about how the main character has got Ishmael Leseur’s Syndrome, but that’s not going to stop him from his journey in his new school. This is a good book to read and is fun and enjoyable for all ages.  Maeana, Year 8

So far I haven’t read far into the book but I have already enjoyed reading it. It is a humorous book and every sentence you read you are guaranteed to laugh. Barry Bagsley is a very interesting and funny character and he keeps the story going. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a laugh and likes an interesting and adventurous story. I am really looking forward for the end of the book. Brent, Year 8

‘Don’t Call me Ishmael’ is definitely a comedy book. I have always found funny books boring and not all that funny, but this book I actually find interesting. I like this book because of the characters: I find Miss Tarangoa an interesting character as she tricks Barry into thinking he’s going to win the day off school but ends up making him wait until she wants to finish the game (which could be the next day or the next year etc.). I would recommend this book to people who like a book that has comedy in it. I think that by the end of the book I will want to keep reading more. Emily, Year 8

‘Boy Overboard’ by Morris Gleitzman

boy overboardThe book I am reading is called ‘Boy Overboard’. It is about a boy named Jamal who lives with his family in a village in a war zone in Afghanistan. He also has a sister named Bibi who is always breaking the government’s rules by going outside. Both of them have a love for soccer and Jamal loves to play in the street with his friends and use all of his tricks visualizing that he’s playing in the World Cup. Also his family’s home is blown up by the government and they are looking to go somewhere safe. The book was written by funny English born Australian author Morris Gleitzman, who is well known around Australia and some parts of Europe. I am only halfway through this book and I can already see it shaping up to be a book that I will love and want to read again and again. BY BRODIE, Year 8

The book I am reading is ‘Boy Overboard’. I have read one quarter of the book and so far it’s good. The book is about a family who lives in Afghanistan and run an illegal school. But when the police find out about the school they are forced to try and live in Australia. I would recommend this book for people 10 and older. The thing I found in this book was once I picked it up I could not put it down. That’s why I am giving it an 8 out of 10 rating. Jarrod, Year 8

‘Just Shocking’ by Andy Griffiths

just shockingThis book is about a boy called Andy. He shares many different funny stories about his friends and family as well as personal stories that have happened in his life. Some of the stories are just stupid but they still make you laugh. Others really make you think. I would recommend this book to someone who likes comedy.  Another title for this book could be ‘Funny Stuff’. Luke, Year 9 http://www.andygriffiths.com.au/

‘Uncovered’ by Paul Jennings

uncovered‘Uncovered’ is full of short stories which are humorous and witty. Paul Jennings is a great Australian author. We all love his work, and most of his books have great stories.  I recommend ‘Uncovered’ because it’s a very creative book, with stories ranging from horror to drama to comedy. It’s very exciting and ‘in your face’.

One of the stories  is about a boy obsessed with toilet paper. My favourite part of the story is where Richard rips up all of the toilet paper he cherishes and makes it look like it is snowing so his brother on his deathbed can see the wonder of snow. This part was very touching. It helped you feel Richard’s pain, even though he was special and obsessed with toilet paper and could not talk. Rowell, Year 9 http://www.pauljennings.com.au/
