‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ by Rick Riordan

Percy JacksonHave you ever been chased by a Minotaur? Meet Percy Jackson, the newest kid to arrive at Camp Half-Blood. To make matters worse, he is also a child of the big three gods. If you enjoy action-adventure books that leave you wondering what will happen at every turn, then this is the book for you!

Percy Jackson has had a rude awakening. He had been living a normal life for twelve years before his first attack. It seemed like an ordinary excursion, until his maths teacher grew wings and turned into a monster. Percy is the prime suspect, and if he doesn’t return the lightning bolt to Zeus, then the Olympians will be at war. Percy Jackson has been issued a prophecy,

“You shall go west, and face the god who has turned,

You shall find what was stolen, and see it safely returned,

You shall be betrayed by one who calls you a friend,

And you shall fail to save what matters most, in the end.”

Prophecies are required to go on a quest and this prophecy is about to send Percy Jackson and his friends, a satyr and a daughter of Athena, on their first ever quest. The Greek gods of myth and legend are still very much alive, and there is about to be a war.

I would recommend this book to teens and young adults between the ages of 12 and 20. I really enjoyed the book ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ because it is a fast paced book for action seeking readers. It does an excellent job at combining mythology with the modern day so that the stories seem realistic. I would rate the book 5 out of 5 stars as the book grabs you by the first chapter and doesn’t let go.

……………

On face value, Percy Jackson appears a normal twelve-year old school student studying in New York. Percy, like other students at his school, is troubled, bullied and drowning in homework. Percy suffers from dyslexia. But what Percy doesn’t know is that his dyslexia is a sign of great power. Percy is a demi-god, the earthly offspring of a Greek god, consequently granting him superhuman powers, powers only ever described in Greek mythology. Through his power, Percy soon learns that he is the final and deciding hope in preserving a race that has stood for thousands of years: humanity.

In the novel, Percy is wrongly accused of the theft of a lethal weapon that could alter the course of history. This theft has sparked outrage from its owner, Zeus, and if not returned within a time limit, Zeus has proposed that he will end the existence of Earth. This accusation leads to Percy’s mother being kidnapped as ransom by Hades, in order for Percy to be lured into the realm of the Underworld, where Hades awaits. Percy soon finds himself on a dangerous odyssey to rescue his mother. By doing so, he will ultimately ensure that the world survives. Grover, a young satyr, and Annabeth, the daughter of warfare goddess Athena, have both been summoned to protect Percy from imminent danger, to ultimately ensure he successfully completes his quest. But will Percy be able to survive the ominous wrath of Hades that lies beneath the Earth’s surface, let alone be able to ensure that all humanity is protected?

What I greatly enjoyed about this novel is its overall fast-paced plot and storyline, containing enough suspense and unexpected twists and ever-changing scenarios and settings to keep me glued to the book. The breakneck speed storyline is supported by the author’s effective use of descriptive language, providing me with vivid images, and allowing me to become immersed in the story. Additionally, I thoroughly enjoyed the unique themes of the book. One of which was Greek mythology, with its detailed references and explanations providing both excitement and education. Through its inclusion, it was easy to draw parallels between ancient societies and today. On a negative note, I believe that the introduction of the novel could have been developed in a different way, as it is rather slow to kick off with, which can initially detract the attention of the reader.

To conclude, I would recommend this story to those in the age bracket of twelve to sixteen who thoroughly enjoy unique, action-packed reads within the themes of fantasy and adventure, and additionally want to gain insightful knowledge of ancient Greek history and mythology. Overall, I would rate Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief four out of five stars. – Jacob B, Year 9

…………….

Percy Jackson is a ’12vie’ in his prime after being kicked out of several schools. He has dyslexia and ADHD and always runs into trouble. Trying not to break any records for most school expulsions he is doing his best not to be kicked out of Yancy Academy. But one day on a field trip to an art museum, his Maths teacher turned into a monster and attacks Percy and his friend Grover. Percy destroys his Maths teacher but afterwards thinks he is hallucinating after finding out no one remembers his Maths teacher.

After this Percy finds out he is a half blood half human half-god son to Poseidon. He and his friend Grover, who turns out to be a satyr, go to the safest place possible: Camp Halfblood, a summer camp for kids like Percy. At Camp Halfblood, all these children of the gods are learning how to use their powers in activities likes racing sword fighting and capture the flag games. Then when everything is starting to look better, trouble yet again finds Percy Jackson when Zeus’s master bolt is stolen. Percy is the main suspect because he is the son of Poseidon, and Zeus and Poseidon are currently fighting. So Percy, Grover and their new friend Annabeth set out on a quest to find and return the lightning bolt to Mount Olympus.  On this journey, Percy will need to come to terms with who he is and discover his new powers.

This book is well done. The plot is intriguing, the characters are interesting and not at all one dimensional and overall it is a good read. I give this book an 8/10 and would suggest it for kids 10 and up who like fantasy adventure stories.  -Tommy B., Year 9

‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ by Rick Riordan

“Half Boy, Half God, All Hero…” – Rick Riordan

Percy JacksonThis book is an entertaining, exciting, action pack book that takes you on amazing adventures. Percy Jackson is the main character in this book, along with his friends and family, he finds out that he is more abnormal then he expects he is.

Percy Jackson is a 12-year old boy that hasn’t always had the greatest luck at school but finds out that he was born on this earth for a reason…he is half blood and deserves to be noticed as a hero not a trouble maker. Along this adventure, Percy has many new friends and family to help him get through this new life he has been given. Throughout this book, Percy has to fight and destroy terrible creatures with razor sharp teeth and claws so sharp they could rip his flesh to shreds. To help him, he has got his best friend Grover that may or may not always be telling the truth.

This book is exciting to read and you will never get bored. I like everything about this book for example, the action pack story, the scary yet excitement of the monsters and the different characters in each part of the book. The way Rick Riordan, the author, used descriptive language in this book made it easy for to picture the story in your head. Having the story in my head is better than just saying the words, it makes me feel like I’m living in the story. It’s interesting and scary at the same time, what more can you ask for?

I recommend this book for action pack teenagers with a determinated personality. 10-15 year olds that enjoy fantasy, adventure/action and sci-fi books. This book can be scary so nobody too young should read it.

“One of the best books of the year…vastly entertaining!”  – Independent

Come and meet Percy Jackson and his fiends in an action packed adventure traveling to different places, moving schools, making new friends and more.

Percy is a 12-year-old boy that has never really had much luck in his life. He is always making more and more trouble and hurting the important people around him whatever he does and where ever he goes.

Throughout this book, Percy is forced to make new decisions and new friends. When Percy transfers to his new school he meets soon to be best friend Grover. Grover was a little scrawny boy. By that I mean bony and very thin. Now Percy is a half blood and that is his secret but what he doesn’t know is that Grover has a secret too. What could it be? As the book goes on Percy is forced to find out who his real friends are and that he is the only half-blood left. But Percy still hasn’t worked out that he is the only one that has the power to stop a war of the Gods. Percy needs to conquer his quest otherwise there will be trouble ahead…

I wasn’t a fan of the book because it was a bit slow at the start and I disliked the way it was written, however I really did enjoy how the author used descriptive words making it easy to see and imagine what is happening in the book. I would definitely recommend this book for 12 year olds to maybe 16-17 if you really do like fantasy and adventures.

If you have already read this book then you should definitely go and read all the other stories about Percy Jackson and the adventures of Percy and his friends!

Does this sound like the book for you?

‘Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief’ by Rick Riordan

Meet Percy Jackson. From a normal human’s perspective, he would look like a normal troubled twelve-year-old boy. But really he is our last hope to save the earth from the grasps of the two biggest gods going to battle. Does this sound like a book that would cast a spell on you to keep reading through the night? Then Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is the perfect book for you!

There is a war about to happen. The two gods, Hades and Aries, are about to battle one of the most devastating battles ever. Percy Jackson thinks he is a normal teenage 12-year-old boy living in a normal world in New York City, that is until he finds out he is the son of Poseidon, and the only safe place in the world is at Half Blood Camp. There he is summoned to go on a quest with Grover, (a half horse, half boy) and Annabeth (a newly met girl) to try and find Aries’ lightning bolt and safely return it to him so Percy will get his Mother back. Whilst this is happening, monsters are trying to kill them, as Hades wants the war to go on. The main characters in the story are Percy, Grover and Annabeth.

I really enjoyed reading the book, ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ because it is a story about a twelve year old that has dyslexia, ADHD, and he thinks he has a bad life, like most real teenagers in the world. But then Percy gets told that all these bad things were because he is a demi-god! And he realises that he is on top of the wanted list by the god Hades (The god of the underworld). The reason I like this book so much is because it is about friendships and family, with a lot of action to entertain, and educates you about the Greek Gods and their powers and their sons and daughters. Rick Riordan constantly kept me glued to this book, chapter after chapter, with the constant action, mystery and bravery. With easy to imagine scenes, it’s a great action packed thriller with an amazing storyline,. This could easily be in contention for my best read this year!

I recommend this book to boys from teen to young adults, aged between 12-15 who are interested in Mythological Fantasy and Fiction books which are action packed, thrilling, entertaining and mysterious novels. This book is an excellent read. I rate ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ 4 out of 5 stars. Sam, Year 9

I really enjoyed the book , “Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief”. It is a very adventurous book and is very exhilarating throughout the entire book. There are a lot of twists and turns and it made me want to keep reading until I read the book from cover to cover.
This book is about a boy who has dyslexia. He thought his life was miserable, but he had a special ability that gets explained in the book. Later on in the book his mother gets abducted by Hades (God of the Underworld) so then Percy goes on a quest with his mates Grover and Annabel to rescue his mother and return the Lighting Bolt that has been stolen by one of the characters in the book.
This book has made me want to read the whole Percy Jackson Series and more books of any genre.

I recommend this book to teens and young adults between the ages of 11 – 20 who are interested in adventurous action-packed fantasy. This is one of my favourite books and I hope to enjoy the other books in the series as much as I did this one. This book is honestly a great book to read especially if it’s a rainy day outside and there is nothing to do. By reading this great book it will make you want to wish every day was a rainy day. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

‘Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief’ by Rick Riordan

Imagine a world where you could breathe underwater and control any underwater animal. Well, this is the life of Percy Jackson from the book Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief written by Rick Riordan.

When I started reading I couldn’t stop. All I could think of is was what was going to happen next.

Percy Jackson is a 12-year-old demigod (half human-half god) but he doesn’t know this. He only knows he is having problems in school dealing with dyslexia and ADHD. He attends a school for troubled kids. However Percy has bigger problems. He is about to discover that he is the son of Poseidon, that his uncle Zeus believes Percy has stolen his lightning bolt, and that a war between the gods will erupt if Percy does not make it to Mount Olympus to talk to Zeus.

In one day Percy not only discovers all of this, but also that his best friend Grover is really his protector. Grover is a satyr – half man and half goat, his teacher Mr. Brunner is really a centaur – half horse and half human. However Aries (God of war) wants to kill Percy and retrieve the lightning bolt so that the gods will start a war again.

If you want to find out more, read the book and experience the adventure I experienced. I recommend this book for teenagers and overall I rate this book 4 star.

If you want a book with action, out of this world adventure and outrageous fantasy, READ THIS BOOK! Percy Jackson is a demi-god trying to find Zeus’s powerful lightning bolt before a mass war of the gods breaks out threatening to destroy the world. You must read ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ to find out if Percy saves the world.

The story starts with Percy and his best friend Grover being normal 6th graders going to a school for troubled children. Then Percy finds out his best friend’s a satur and he is the most powerful demi-gods alive. They have to reach a camp for half bloods before he gets killed. They both reached safety except Percy’s mother.

I enjoyed this book by Rick Riordan because it is full of action and hard to put down because you want to know what’s going to happen next. I recommend this story to teen readers of science fiction. If you enjoy the Harry Potter series, read this book because it’s even better and it’s filled with more action. Rion, Year 8

——————————————————————————-

I have recently read the book ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ and this is the book to read this winter. If you love fantasy sci-fi then you will love this book. It was written by Rick Riordan in 2005, but still delivers an action packed punch. This book is all about finding a special something inside you that everyone has no matter what.

Percy Jackson is a 12 year old who has moved to his 6th school in just six years because he is troubled, has dyslexia and ADHD. He hasn’t had many friends until he met Grover, also a troubled student at Yancy High who has been Percy’s only friend. They are mischievous young boys on the verge of being expelled.

Suddenly in one day he figures out his whole life, like why his father left him and why he doesn’t fit in anywhere. He is almost killed when he goes to his childhood holiday destination. They run to a camp he has no idea about and on the way his mother is crushed into sand and sent to the underworld by a Minotaur but luckily Percy makes it to the camp.

He goes on a trip around the country to find three pearls that let him return from the underworld once he enters if he doesn’t find them before the gates close to enter the underworld. But when he is about to leave he finds out his ‘friend’ at camp half-blood put Zeus’s lightning bolt in the shield in which he received from him. This creates arguments between the gods and Percy needs to find the Gods to hand Zeus his lightning bolt before there is a war in Mount Olympus. Will he be able to?

In conclusion I give this book a rating of 9/10 and recommend it to any people over the age of 10 and of any gender. This book inspired me to live life and to expect anything. This is a great book and if you get the chance you should definitely read this book.

‘Dragon Keeper’ by Carole Wilkinson

I’m not the person who will just read any book I get given as I am a very fussy reader but Dragon Keeper is one of the very first books that I have read even though I didn’t select it out myself.

This book is targeted at young teenage girls who enjoy fantasy books such as ‘Harry Potter’. The reason this is suitable is because it gives us fantastic life lessons such as putting others first as well as being interesting. Honestly I would not recommend this book to impatient readers as at times the story can be slow but when the action is happening the novel does become very thrill seeking. This book follows a girl who, as an everyday job must feed dragons and, when one saves her life she runs away with it on an amazing journey to the sea and along the way must keep safe a mystical dragon rock.

To summarise the book I have to say that the author Carole Wilkinson is very imaginative and that this is a wonderful book about facing fears, a miraculous journey and friendship. Simone, Year 8

————————————————————————————-

I love books, so I will read anything I am given, but The Dragon Keeper is definitely one of my top five. The Dragon Keeper is an exciting and adventurous book. I loved every single moment of reading it and I was so keen to turn the page to find out what happened next.

This book would be most enjoyed by ages 12 and up and for all those who read books like Harry Potter. This book has also received awards including the QLD Premier Literary Award for 2004 and has had positive comments from the Herald Sun and Gary Crew.

To summarise this book Carole Wilkinson is a very enthusiastic and imaginative writer and this book will “enchant every reader”. I hope you love every “Dragon Tooth, Scale and Claw”.

______________________________________________________________

I am not the type of person who particularly likes to read. If a teacher or somebody told me to read a book, I would try to avoid it as much as I could. But I have never found a book that that I enjoy more than Dragon Keeper by Carole Wilkinson, which is a fantasy and adventure book set in an Ancient Chinese Han Dynasty to be read by any gender.

The book’s main characters are Ping, Long Danzi, Hua, and Diao.  The character ‘Ping’ was a slave girl taken away from her family when she was a young girl, and the only friend she had was a rat called ‘Hua’. ‘Danzi’ is her dragon companion who helped Ping escape from her terrible master and they are now travelling to the ocean. Along the way, ‘Diao’ stops them in their tracks and is trying to take away the dragon stone. On the way to the ocean Ping finds a special power in her, to defeat the horrible Diao!!

I especially love this novel because it never gives away any detail of what might happen in the next chapter. It is a great book with so much fantasy and adventure in every page to make it impossible to put down!!

I would highly recommend this this book for anybody starting at age 12- to a suitable age maybe higher than 60, as the vocabulary featured in this book is suited for any age. It is a great book, filled with new problems, adventure, yet it also brings a smile or maybe even a tear to one’s face.

By Courtney, Year 8

—————————————————————————————–

I am not one of those people that love to read but when I read Dragon Keeper it was like a fantasy novel.  It blew me away!

In Dragon Keeper there was a girl named Ping and she was a slave that lived on a dragon farm. Her master was Master Lan, who controlled her. She had to do everything that he said.

The book’s main characters were Ping, Danzi, Master Lan, Diao, Hua, Kia Duan and Lao Ma. Hua was a rat that got carried everywhere with Ping.

He would always hide in her pocket of her jacket to keep nice and warm. Danzi was a dragon that escaped from Master Lan and took Ping with him.  He could change into an old man and a snake and  couldn’t be recognised by other people.

I highly recommend this book for girls between 14 and up, as the vocabulary featured in this book is very hard to understand. It’s a great book filled with a lot of adventures. Every page you turn to there would be a new adventure.

‘Percy Jackson and the Lightnng Thief’ by Rick Riordan

I am reading a book called Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief, written by Rick Riordan.

I have to admit I loved this book; it is so exciting! When I opened the book and as I read the first couple of pages it was packed with adventure. There are so many things going through your head. What will happen next?

This book is about a boy called Percy Jackson. He is a half blood: half  God/half boy, and he goes to a private school for troubled kids. Percy Jackson has a best friend Grover but there is a big secret that Percy Jackson doesn’t know about Grover. There is someone else in with Grover. Unsuspectedly the person who is in with Grover is Mr Brunner, who is the teacher in a wheel electric wheelchair. Mr Brunner and Grover had a secret meeting after school without Percy but the thing that they didn’t know is that Percy was behind the corner listening into what they were saying. The thing Percy heard was that he was half God. Is this true? Is he being delusional? Is this just all a dream that he wake up from?

Find out more and read the book. I give this book a 7/10 and I recommend this book to teenagers and boys and girls.

‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ by Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson“Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief” is an awesome book, but it does have a very odd start to it.  Percy Jackson is twelve years old and has been kicked out of six schools in six consecutive years and he is convinced his life is completely out of the ordinary.  Each time he was kicked out on the school’s annual field trip, and on this year’s field trip he goes to the ancient Greeks’ museum.  But this year he promises himself it’s going to be different (with the help of his best friend Grover) and it sure as hell was.  After he pushes a bully into a little water fountain his maths teacher takes him into the museum for a little talk.  And this is no ordinary talk. She asks him weird questions about “The thief of a lightning bolt” and other weird things, then she starts yelling at him.  The other teacher on the field trip, Mr Brunner, throws him a pen for some mysterious reason.  Then as soon as he catches that pen his maths teacher turns into a hideous bat-looking thing.  Percy is confused and scared at the same time, but just as he thinks that, a voice in his head tells him to uncap the pen.  When he does it suddenly turns into a sword.  When his Maths teacher tries to attack him he slices the sword at her with all his strength and she just turns into a gold sparkle!  If you don’t find that out of the ordinary I can assure you, you’re out of the ordinary.  I would recommend this book for people who like fantasy books or like books about ancient gods. I would recommend this book for all ages if you are able to read it. By Connor, Year 8
