‘Roxy’s Baby’ by Catherine MacPhail

Imagine if you were a young girl who became pregnant at the age of 14, what would you do? And how would you tell your parents? Well Roxy is in this situation and has no clue what she is going to do. Ever since her father passed away things have been trouble. Roxy’s mother has a new boyfriend and she feels as if she is the outsider of the family, especially compared with her little miss perfect sister, Jenifer. Roxy makes the decision to run away to this house for lost girls who are having trouble at home. She read about it in an article once. When she gets there she is informed that she is unable to stay there because she is underage. Roxy has nowhere to go and is worried about what will happen next and then the Dyce’s come along. Sabrina Year 9

If you were a 14 year old girl who just fell pregnant, how would you deal with it? Roxy is a 14 year old girl, her father has passed away and her mother is engaged to a new man. She also doesn’t get along with her sister Jennifer. Jennifer and Roxy have very different personalities and find it hard to live together. Roxy goes out and parties and one night her friends force her into doing something she doesn’t want to do and she ends up pregnant. Because of all the family issues at home she feels as though she can’t tell her mother or sister anything. So instead of facing her problems she runs away to London, to a house for misunderstood girls. When she gets there they won’t accept her so she goes to the Dyce’s. Many questions begin to be asked and you begin to wonder if there’s something weird about the Dyce’s? Cassidy Year 9

‘Roxy’s Baby’, is an amazing, heartfelt novel that makes you realise there are special things in life. Roxy is only 14 years of age, and falls pregnant. She feels as though she is unwanted and unloved by her mother, her mother’s new lover Paul and her sister Jennifer, after her father’s death. She rebels against them and decides to run away to London. I recommend this novel to teenagers because it is a very touching and emotional story. Emma Year 9

Amazing! This book gets you hooked in a second. The story is set in England, in a homeless house for pregnant teenagers. The main character is Roxy, a 16-year-old teenager, who gets pressured by her friends into having sex. The story is about when Roxy gets pregnant and runs away to a home for pregnant teens. But there is something going on that Roxy wants to find out. I love this book so much because it keeps you on the edge of your seat, never wanting to put it down. I recommend this book to teen girls. Chelsea Year 8

Shock! Horror!  Disgust! When I read the book Roxy’s Baby by  Catherine Macphail, I could not believe that people could do what they did. How could they turn on someone so quickly?  Why would people sell something so precious? In the middle of the book it was shocking and scary but you can’t look away. You just need to keep reading. If you look away you will want to go back. It’s like a book that you need to finish and see what happens. When I was reading it I was angry about what they did. I wanted to change what happened and what they did but I knew I couldn’t. If I met someone like that I would run as far away as possible. I thought the book help me learn not to talk to strangers and not to run away at a young age.  I would recommend this story to people that are pregnant at a young age and people that think they hate their life .            Ebony  YEAR 8

‘Edgy’ and ‘shock’ were the words that jumped out at me as I started to read this book. The story is mainly set in London when Roxy meets Mr and Mrs Dyce. Roxy is the main character of this story. She was pretty wild but was just acting her age most of the time. Jennifer was Roxy’s little sister who was described as ‘goody-two-shoes’ by Roxy. Mr and Mrs Dyce are the couple looking after Roxy. Roxy is a typical 14 year old girl who likes to party with friends and hates her family. It wasn’t until one night she became pregnant she wasn’t so wild anymore and decided to run away from home.

This book intriguing and makes you wanting to keep on reading. The book highlights the different parts in the story enough to help you understand what is happening fully and to not be complicated. The outline of the story is well described and the words make the book interesting. I would recommend this book to anybody who has had the same kind of experience as Roxy or any other main character. I would also recommend this book to people who enjoy the same kind of stories as the book. Georgia. Year 8.
