‘Gone’ by Michael Grant

gone‘We didn’t make this world; we’re just the poor fools who are living in it.

In ‘Gone’, kids over the age of 15 disappear from Perdido Beach and kids under that are left alone without adults. What is left in this situation is fear and chaos. The area has a sphere barrier around it and is nicknamed the FAYZ (Fallout Alley Youth Zone).

The three main characters of this novel are Sam Temple, Astrid Ellison and Quinn Gaither, all 14 years old turning 15. Sam, also known as ‘School Bus Sam’, is seen as a hero by the little kids in town and there is an expectation that he will take charge of the FAYZ. Astrid is a genius who knows a lot of things. She often and helps Sam out, and Quinn is a surfer and Sam’s best friend.

Briefly, the book goes through deaths and major injuries and things that you can’t scientifically prove. Kids in the FAYZ start to be able to use supernatural powers and some bullies try to use it for fighting and killing. During the story, Sam and his friends run away from the bullies so they take charge of the FAYZ. But while running away they realise the secret of the FAYZ and choose to fight the bullies before their fifteenth birthday. But he needs to hurry, as he has only 13 days left.

I liked this book because it showed clearly what would happen if adults in this world disappear. It showed how kids could go mentally crazy and out of touch. I believe it also shows true leadership and bravery from Sam as he chooses to fight the bullies in town to stop deaths and killings happening. I recommend this book to teenager boys or girls because the characters’ ages are pretty close to the reader and could have some things that you could relate to. I rate this novel 4 out of 5 because it changes characters sometimes and it’s hard to recognise that.

‘Legend’ by Marie Lu

legend_coverDay is a renegade from the streets, a criminal on the run. June, on the other hand, is a student at the university training to be part of the republic. Her first task is to hunt down Day.

Do you like the ultimate game of cat and mouse, with action and romance on the side? Then ‘Legend’ is the book for you.

Set in a post-apocalyptic styled Los Angeles, June and Day are on opposite sides of a raging war. June is from a good family, training to become a military star. She is on a mission of revenge to find her brother’s killer; she will find him at all costs. Day, the ultimate outlaw, steals money and goods to support and take care of his family. June anticipates that Day is the killer, which makes the book so much more interesting as she is on the hunt for unsuspecting Day.

The story picks up pace when the two protagonists cross paths at a fight where June saves Tess, a close friend of Day’s. They become close even sharing a kiss one night but June doesn’t realise who he is. When June finally realises, she contacts Thomas, a soldier who served with her brother and they raid Day’s family house taking Day into custody.

While in custody, Day and his brothers are interrogated and tortured. June starts to have doubts about Day being the killer and after reading her brother’s journal she finds out that the government are corrupt and that the soldier Thomas actually killed her brother. She helps Day escape and they travel to the colonies to get ready to fight against the Republic.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as it kept me drawn in from the very start. The action, the romance, the corruption, the controversy – its all there! I would recommend this book to 12-16 year old teenagers because the book uses mature content and language. The book is definitely worthwhile. I’d rate this book 8/10.

A must read.”

‘Shiver’ by Maggie Stiefvater

ShiverForget the full moon and silver bullets. These wolves are different from any other wolves known. During the summer they’re human but by winter they’re wolves.

Shiver is an eerie, bittersweet love story with some thriller and comedy elements. The writing is lyrical and the descriptions are breathtaking and I can guarantee anyone who reads this book will love it.

When Grace was a young girl she was victim to a freak wolf attack. When she thought she was going to die, one wolf with yellow eyes fended off the others. Grace lived, and after the attack she has been catching glimpses of those same yellow eyes in the woods next to her house, protecting her. She always longed for winter to come so she could see her wolf again.

When another attack occurs and the wolves kill a teenage boy, a hunting party is assembled to shoot at the pack of wolves. Grace tries to stop the hunting in fear for her wolf, only to find a teenage boy naked and shot on the back of his neck, on her porch. The boy has the same eyes as her wolf. Grace learns that the boy, Sam, is her wolf and that he has been watching her and protecting her from afar since the attack. She discovers the deep, dark secrets of Sam’s past and she learns why he was gone during the summer and how it is possible. Sam fears he will turn into a wolf and will never turn human again. Sam and Grace will do anything to find the cure that will keep Sam human. How much will they really sacrifice to get the cure? Will they find the cure at all before Sam turns into a wolf again?

I fell in love with this book because of its Romeo and Juliet theme and because it is told from the perspectives of both Sam and Grace and I love how it’s written this way. I would recommend this book to people of the ages 12-20.

‘Twilight’ by Stephenie Meyer

“About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him, and I didn’t know how tame that part might be that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.”

twilightTwilight is set in Forks, Washington. Forks is rarely visited by the warm sunlight, a perfect condition for Edward’s family of vampires.

The story tells of the love between a human, Belle Swan, and vampire Edward Cullen. Bella is a pretty, pale, small, shy 17-year-old who likes to keep to herself and isn’t all that good at sports. Edward is a perfect stunning 17-year-old boy who is admired by every girl in his school, including Bella, and he is good at everything.

The book is about Bella moving to Forks and meeting Edward, with Bella immediately intimidated by his dazzling eyes. Edward can read minds but he is stopped when he realises he can’t read hers. He ends up feeling very protective over her and they fall in love, but it isn’t so innocent. Soon she will either have to decide if she wants to be with Edward forever, meaning she can’t stay human, or be with her family and not Edward. Throughout the book you fall in love with the love shared between the two characters. The amount of consideration and daring they present to each other is so meaningful.

One of the reasons why I love this book is because of the relationship between the main characters even though they are so different. Bella is quiet and harmless, and she often stumbles into damaging situations, and Edward often saved her from these scenarios. One of the first scenes leading up to Bella uncovering his secret is when she is standing by her car in a parking lot and she is almost slammed between two cars. If not for Edward’s super speed, she wouldn’t have survived.

I would recommend this book for teenagers; it is a very intriguing book, definitely hard to put down.

“About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him-and I didn’t know how tame that part might be that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.”

Twilight is set in Forks, Washington. Forks hardly ever gets any good weather so it’s mainly just cloudy with no sun. The story is mainly about a warm blooded person and a cold blooded vampire.

Bella moves back to Forks and she meets a guy named Edward at her school. She immediately fell for Edward Cullen. Edward can read minds but he is confused when he realises he can’t read Bella’s. He ends up feeling very protective over her and he follows her everywhere so he knows she’s safe. Edward ends up falling in love with Bella as well, but a human is a threat to the vampire world. If any other humans find out about Edward and his family the Denali Coven clan would have to kill the Cullens. But that doesn’t stop Edward and Bella; Bella’s just got to try and keep they’re secret.

I have recommended this book to many people, and the people I have recommended this to have absolutely loved it. This book is mainly for teenagers, young adults and even adults. This is one of my favourite books because the connection between the two main characters is a very interesting story and the book just doesn’t stop at twilight. There are four more novels in the twilight series and these books do not disappoint.

‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter & the Goblet of FireThe fourth stunning book to J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series is arguably one of, if not the best, installment yet. The action packed novel has already had so many positive reviews, such as: ‘Impressive detail, humour and inventiveness … a triumph.’ –Courier Mail and ‘J.K. Rowling has delivered … her best book yet.’ – Sunday Telegraph. These reviews, not surprisingly, are absolutely accurate. The book is full of fun and excitement, and packed full of heated moments and heartbreaking tragedies.

The story is yet again based in the magical school of witchcraft and wizardry called Hogwarts, where Harry joins his two best friends Hermione and Ron in an action-packed adventure. There’s a dazzling plot twist where people close to Harry are put in grave danger, this novel sees the return of dangerous and ancient evil enemies and its up to Harry to save the day once again, for the fourth, and not the last time.

In my opinion, this is the best installment of the Harry Potter series yet; it’s full of mystery, suspense, action, humour and heart wrenching moments of pure ingenuity. The creativity needed to write this enchanting book is outstanding. The brilliance needed to think of all these thrilling moments is impressive, and in the end, millions around the world love these books. The series has become so successful, there have been movies made about them, and I can tell you, those movies do not even come close to the passion and creativity put into this book.

This book is so complicated, genius, thrilling, and most of all, majestic. The Harry Potter series is so entertaining, everyone can enjoy it, young to old, black or white, man or woman though I would probably recommend this book to those over 9-10 years old, as it is a little bit hard to follow, and a very long book. But my personal opinion, I would rate it 8.5/10, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I believe you will to!

‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins

“Here’s some advice, Stay alive.”

Hunger Games - may the odds be ever in your favor. The Hunger Games were set in a place of confinement. Between the thirteen districts, people died of hunger, thirst and sickness yet the games engulfed all. There was no mercy of the Capitol’s rage and torturous ways against them. The ones who survived were the soldiers.

Before the Hunger Games began there had been a rebellion by the districts against the Capitol, however it failed and the final district, District 13, was destroyed. The Capitol won and to terminate all chances of another rebellion they developed a game to terrify all districts, The Hunger Games.

Two tributes’ names were pulled out of a bowl during a celebration called the reaping in each district, one boy and one girl, from the ages of twelve to eighteen each year.

hunger gamesKatniss, a loving, strong willed girl, was left alone with her mother and sister Prim after her father’s unexpected passing, which left her dazed and fending for her sister and mother. Before her father died he taught her how to hunt with homemade weapons, which were hidden in the woods, away from the gamekeepers and Capitol’s grasp. She used these skills after his death to kill and trade for food and other much needed goods. Katniss’ mother on the other hand had zoned out, unable to cope without Katniss and Prim’s father. As a result, Katniss looked after nearly the entire household, and Prim managed milking and caring for her goat.

Peeta, the quiet baker’s boy, was kind and caring, never thinking of himself. He helped Katniss when she lay in the rain, cold, starving and tired, by donating a small amount of bread. Peeta also supposedly had had a crush on Katniss since the first time he had laid eyes on her. He was, however, too loving for the Hunger Games and even for District 12.

When Prim (Katniss’ sister) was selected to be tribute at their district’s reaping, Katniss was definitely in shock.

She jumped at the opportunity to save her sister, immediately volunteering, which surprised the districts as well as the Capitol!

When Peeta Mellark’s name was pulled out, without even looking Katniss recognised his name. Peeta on the other hand had bad luck in a whole other concept, a way that’s hard to explain and hard to come by in the District of 12.

When Peeta and Katniss are to be thrown into an arena for the 74th hunger games, to kill one another, all for the entertainment of the Capitol and to scare the people of the districts, you would definitely ask, what would they even say to one another? Would you even talk to the other tributes at all? Would you try to attract or become friends with the other tributes, so in the games you might have a higher chance of surviving?

When they become crowd favourites, everyone either wants to kill them or to be them.

Although Peeta and Katniss knew that they had to survive, they had to show the Capitol that they did not own them and if they were going to die it would be as themselves and no one else.

The story of the Hunger Games, I believe is bewildering, breathtaking and a definite hair-raiser. The book itself leaves you in a daze which you can’t break out of; it’s as though you just can’t stop reading. It is a great read and I recommend it to anyone in his or her teenage years onward.

‘Ice breaker’ by Lian Tanner

ice-breakerSailing the ice and cold, trying to disappear in a lonely world, the rumbles and creaks of the dimly lit ship are her only comfort, but she is unaware that she will be an instrument in the revival of knowledge.

An isolated ‘Ice Breaker’, the Oyster sailing the Southern Pole on an ancient voyage long forgotten by the feuding crew holds secrets millennium old. Petrel, ‘The Nothing Girl’, despised by the three tribes of crew, is twelve years old. She has never known who her parents are but it doesn’t bother her. All that changes when she spots a ‘Frozen Boy’ on an iceberg. Did he fall from the sky? What will happen? To find this out you need to read ‘Ice Breaker’.

This book is a real page-turner. There is a bit of a build up introducing the characters and plot, but once that was out of the way the pace of the story really picked up with treachery, murder, and secrets.

I recommend this book to people who enjoy tension in their books and a bit of mystery. But I found it surprisingly easy to understand too. You would think a book like this, with all its little guessing games and plot twists, would be hard to comprehend at the end. But I discovered it to be wrapped up in a nice neat package, but leaving me wanting more. So I am reading the second book in the series ‘Sunker’s Deep’. It’s a follow on from the first and is just as good but it does reveal some more answers and questions that can only be solved by Petrel and her newly acquired friends on the Oyster. I still have no idea what is in store for them in the next book but it looks exciting.

I would rate ‘Ice Breaker’ 9 out of 10 stars.

The Outcasts (Brotherband 1), by John Flanagan

brotherband-1-the-outcastsIn medieval times in the mythical town of Skandia there was a group of boys who had a dream: the dream of being included into a BrotherBand. It is one of the highest honours in Skandia.

A BrotherBand is a group of boys who get selected in a team, and train for three months, learning to use weapons and sail a boat. Only one BrotherBand can win the race. The points are totalled up to see, which team wins.  Hals’ BrotherBand is named the “Herons.”  The first activity is to see who can build the best shelter to live in.  If they win the most points they win Skandia’s most valuable treasure.  Hal is an inventor who has designed the Herons’ boat.  They named it the Heron after their team.  He has a revolutionary new idea for the sails. If Hal’s idea works they are certain to win.  Hal is the leader of the BrotherBand, the ‘Herons’, so he drives the boat and coordinates his crew.  He tells them when to row. Hal’s best mate is Thorn. He is a Maktig, which is the champion fighter of the year.  Thorn has been the Maktig for three years in a row when he was in his prime time.  He was like a father figure to Hal.

I liked this book because of its adventurous outlook and the main idea of the book.  If it wasn’t about sailing and adventuring around the sea it wouldn’t be the book for me.  I recommend this book is for 11 to 15 year old boys who are interested in adventure and enjoy being outdoors, otherwise this is not the book for you.  This truly is the book for you, I’d rate this book ‘BotherBand The Outcasts’ 4 out of 5.

……………….

John Flanagan, the author of the worldwide best selling series, Rangers’ Apprentice, has made a return to writing with a new fictional series, Brotherband. Flanagan has taken all of the best components, elements and interesting qualities from Rangers Apprentice and has incorporated and further developed them, to create a remarkable, stunning and truly breathtaking read.

Be prepared to sink into Flanagan’s fictional getaway, which is filled with pirate raids, challenges, and prodigious adventures that make you hold your breath. John Flanagan’s creativity and ability to explain his virtual world really has shown in this new, innovative series.

Hal is the main protagonist in the Brotherband series, whose heritage makes him an outcast among the popular boys in town. Hal faces the daily struggle of a young boy. He and his mother have enlisted the help of the old drunk, Thorn, to guide Hal and train him in the ways of a manly Skandian warrior. At the age of 16, Hal will begin Brotherband training, but without knowledge of the world, strength to defend himself and any real friends to rely on, he’s worried that he’ll be seen as an outcast for the rest of his life.

But things take a turn for the better when the selectors announce Hal as a Brotherband leader. However, the only boys left unselected by the other two Brotherbands are a group of witty, quiet, and relatively unknown boys from the town. Hal needs to give his team a real sample of what Brotherband training is going to be about, and needs to form bonds and become closer with his group if they want to even stand a chance of winning.

This story is a combination of adventure, action, fantasy and cliff-hangers that are found in every corner of the book. It was very entertaining and I felt engaged with the feeling of suspense, mystery, and the authors practicality, his attention to detail and his inventive technique that isn’t seen by many other writers. The book gave me a sense of realism, and provided an insight as to what it would have been like to live in a seaside town full of mighty warriors. Flanagan’s style of writing keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to find out what will happen next.

I recommend this book to people who enjoy adventure, seamanship, and those who take interest in seaside affairs and are aged between 11-14. The book is very well written and the author definitely hasn’t cut any corners with his detailed style of writing. I’d rate this book a 4/5 stars as it kept me deeply interested and entertained and made me want to keep reading.

‘The Coming of the Whirlpool’ (Ship Kings, 1) by Andrew McGahan

The coming of the whirlpoolDow Amber. A proud timber cutter of New Island and epic sailor of the dreaded whirlpool infamously known as the Maelstrom. If you are into books involving epic adventures and action, then “The Ship Kings – The Coming of the Whirlpool” is a perfect read for you!

Dow’s world dramatically changes after he looks toward the ocean from the forest plateau of the highlands of New Island on which he works. The sea summons his ancestor’s bloodline and urges him to sail to the sea. After receiving permission from the elders, Dow is permitted to leave his village and sail with his new mentor, Nathaniel, but that’s not all. Together, in the fishing town known as Stromner he runs into many difficulties, such as destiny, guilt, law and even homesickness that he must overcome. The main characters in this book are Dow Amber, Nathaniel, Boiler Swan the innkeeper and Captain Vincente of the Chloe.

I very much enjoyed nearly every part of this book because of the many unexpected climaxes and how noticeably Dow had matured/changed throughout the book due to the scarring lifestyle he had. The slightly old fashioned language used really helped set the scenes and made the novel much more interesting to read. This book captured me by the way that Andrew McGahan had so well described the settings and history of New Island. The cliff-hanger ending drew me in so much that I immediately began reading the sequel.

I would recommend this book to teenagers and early adults between the ages of 13 – 18 because that is the age of the main character and it allows the reader to relate to some of the situations Dow experienced. This novel would really suit those who are interested in an action-adventure that involves an epic journey. This book and the rest of its series are very entertaining and will keep you reading until midnight. I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

“If you go to sea, you will come to the attention of the Ship Kings. And if they discover who you are, they will kill you.”

The first book of the Ship Kings Trilogy, The Coming of the Whirlpool, can be defined in one word: ‘intriguing’. This book kept me wanting more. Page after page came with a new surprise and unexpected pop-ups. I was still amazed after every chapter. The description and detailing of the setting and background was just spot on. It was easy to imagine it. Dow Amber is a perfect example of teenagers in this society. We start to grow as we get older and be mature about what life throws at us, just like Dow Amber in ‘The Coming of the Whirlpool’. I recommended this book for ages above 12, if they are really interested in adventure and action series. The story is easy to understand and I would give it 4 out of 5, just because I’m not really into adventure books but this one was really fascinating. It definitely reached beyond my expectations. I would definitely read the rest of the Ship King Series.

……………….

Have you ever had a desire? A desire so strong that you just can’t help yourself? If you have, then this amazing adventure book would be perfect for you. It is about a boy named Dow, aged 11 up to 16 over the book, who left his home because he had a desperate desire to go to sea. The only reason this was allowed was because of his genetics of having an ancestor who was a master of the sea. Once at his new home in Stromner, he learned of the sea and the ways of sailing from his new guardian, Nathaniel. Nevertheless, the whirlpool, called the Maelstrom, was a big part of the story and the main part. Will Dow be able to defeat the Maelstrom and accomplish his dream of going out to sea?

The novel Ship Kings- The Coming of the Whirlpool is the first of a trilogy written by Andrew McGahan, and is definitely a very intriguing adventure book.

I think that this book was designed more for boys, although I, as a teenage girl, thoroughly enjoyed the book for I enjoy adventure books. It’s probably better for people of ages in between 12 and 16-17. Anyone that is interested in adventure and a simple but good storyline would enjoy this book. I found the book very effective and unchallenging to understand for it was written in a very descriptive matter, and all events of the book were explained thoroughly. This made it easy for me to connect with what was going on because I could easily picture the scenes.

I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 because of the depth of description and the adventurous storyline. It really displays the feelings of a teenage boy and what would go through their mind. I think McGahan did excellent work with this novel and have enjoyed it so much that I have gone onto reading the next book.

‘Divergent’ by Veronica Roth

divergent“Her heart was beating out of her chest and her lungs tightened as she struggled to let out a breath. I stare at her. ‘Two?’ I ask. My throat is so tight its hard to talk.”

A world where your life and its future is judged by a test, the possibility that you could leave your family lays in the balance. From the moment you turn 16… your life will change.

Do mystery, heroism and hardships intrigue you? If so, Divergent by Veronica Roth is the book for you.

The story takes place in a futuristic world where a large portion of the planet has been influenced by destruction and thus the remaining population was divided into five factions: Dauntless, Candor, Erudite, Abnegation and Amity. A young girl, Beatrice, at the age of 16 must make a decision that will in truth change her future. She soon learns that she is Divergent and doesn’t fit into any of the specific categories. Each of these factions values a specific trait in a human being. These five traits are bravery, intelligence, honesty, selflessness and peace.

I found this novel good as it has a general good plot concept and characters. Like several books in this era, we see a relationship develop between Beatrice and another male character. I would say that the novel comes under the category of a Love and action book due both the continuous action we can see in the novel and the tentative relationships we see. I would personally recommend this book to readers between the ages of 12 and 16 as it has an appealing story to teenagers as they feature in the story. Overall I found the book to be intriguing and mysterious as each key scene in each chapter had me on edge and it is by far one of my favorite reads.

On top of that she must try and protect her family from a growing threat that has yet to surface. How will she survive? Will she be able to overcome her fears? Can she stop the threat before it destroys everything she loves? What does it mean to be Divergent?

Divergent is a thrilling sci-fi novel perfect for teenagers or young adults. It definitely is a must read for fans of the Hunger Games series as well as books like Tomorrow when the War began and I am Number Four. It has an exhilarating pace that has lots of twists and turns and spirals up and down on dramatic levels of tension, emotion and action. The book is so good it has been made into a popular movie that has had rave reviews and is a favorite of almost every teenager at the school. ‘Delirium’ by Lauren Oliver

DeliriumWhat if love were a disease, killing you from the inside out, taking every breath, hoping, praying it wouldn’t be your last?

Delirium, a book written by Lauren Oliver, is set in the small town of Portland, Maine. This novel consists of very few characters, one of which is Lena Haloway driven towards the thought of falling in love, but persistent to not end up like her mother.

Delirium is a difficult novel based upon the belief that ‘love is a disease’.

“There was a time when love was the most important thing in the world. People would go to the end of the earth to find it. They would tell lies for it. Even kill for it.”

You would wait until your 18th birthday before you could receive the procedure, to be cured from love forever. Until then you would have to avoid any contact with an uncured male. But Lena, unknowingly meets a guy called Alex, who she thought was cured, only to find out weeks later that he indeed wasn’t cured at all and in fact was falling in love with her. Shocked and afraid ,she tries to avoid all contact with him, to find out that she herself may be falling for him also.

I enjoyed this book because I have never thought love to be a disease and this statement honestly intrigued me enough to continue reading. As I continued reading, it didn’t fail to disappoint, with constant drama and delusion throughout. I recommend this book to a female aged between 14-30 with sound reading ability, who is interested in fantasy/sci-fi. This is because the themes displayed in this book I believe only a female would enjoy or be interested in. Eve. B Year 9

‘I am Number Four’ by Pittacus Lore

“In the beginning we were a group of nine.

      Three are gone, dead.

There are six of us left.

They are hunting us, and they won’t stop until they’ve killed us all.

      I am number four.

I know that I am next.”

I AM NUMBER FOURThree are dead and I am number four. New York Times Bestseller novel ‘I am number four’ written by Pittacus Lore is a novel you will never want to put down.

Number four, Daniel Jones, John Smith. Whatever you want to call him, he isn’t who they think he is. He was one of the nine aliens that escaped from his planet ‘Lorien’ as a group of Mogadorians (from a planet of their own) invaded and attacked Lorien. The Mogadorians were in need for more supplies for their own planet. Fortunately, he and eight other children were sent away to Earth as he watched Lorien slowly die. Mogadorians followed the children to Earth and cursed them with a charm giving each of them their own number from one to nine. As each of them is hunted and killed by a Mogadorian, a whirl is engraved into their skin, burning their flesh. The first three are dead and Number Four is next. As the years pass, Number Four is constantly moving places and changing identities and eventually he gets fed up with it. So, Number Four and his guardian settle down in the small town of Paradise, Ohio. Here, Number Four receives his legacies that will assist him with fighting the Mogadorians when or if they ever find him. He also meets two friends that he doesn’t want to leave behind, if he was to unexpectedly leave again.

I have absolutely loved reading this book and its unexpected events as I turned each page. I imagined what the characters all look like and where they are as Pittacus has described every scene so intensely. This novel has kept me on the edge of my seat on every page and the thrills keep me continuing reading more.

If you love reading an adventurous, heart-filled, fantasy/sci-fi novel then ‘I am number four’ is definitely the best novel for you! I didn’t want it to end! It can capture an audience of either teenage boys or girls, as there is adventure and action but also some romance to top it off. As this novel is the type of story that I absolutely love reading, I have given it a rating of 4 stars.

…………..

‘Nine escaped and retreated to Earth. Now three are dead, I am number four. I know that I am next.’ – John Smith (Number Four)

John Smith was just your average teen, right? Wrong. His home planet, Lorien, was burdened with an unforeseeable attack from the Mogadorians, who invaded Lorien yearning for its resources. The Mogadorians were evil creatures that set out to eradicate Lorien’s inhabitants, known as Lorics, and wouldn’t stop until they were all dead. The Lorics appeared to have no hope, but they managed to save nine children along with their guardians, who then retreated to Earth. There, they lived seemingly normal lives, except for one thing; the children had a curse placed upon them, which meant they could only be killed in numeric order. Number one through three were dead, and John Smith was number four. He and his guardian, Henri, dedicated their lives to trying to find ways to limit detection by the Mogadorians. They move to a small town in Ohio, and John becomes very attached, and makes some really good friends, which soon becomes an issue for their original plan of keeping a low profile wherever they went.
This is a great novel expressed by a narrator. It is well written, fast-paced, suspenseful, and extremely hard to put down once you’ve begun reading. I was completely engrossed in this story and I couldn’t wait to uncover what happened next. This novel is also relatable to teenagers, as it illustrates matters that are dealt with everyday such as trying to fit in, relationships, and bullying.

I did, however, find one fault with this novel, which is that the author didn’t use very descriptive language. For example, there wasn’t a clear description of what, exactly, the Mogadorians were; therefore I found it extremely difficult to envisage their appearance. Despite this, I still appreciated this novel and would recommend this riveting tale to anyone around the ages of 12-18 who enjoys stimulating, attention-grabbing, action-packed fiction novels with a captivating storyline. I rate this novel 4/5 stars.

…………….

‘I am Number Four’ written by Pittacus Lore is a captivating story filled with fantasy, thrill and romance.

This book is out of this world as you go on a journey with John Smith, also known as Four. A few years ago John travelled on a spacecraft with his guardian Henri and eight other children to come to Earth. The nine had to leave their planet Lorien as it was under attack by the Mogadorians, who were stealing their resources.  They left their planet but they aren’t safe. The Mogadorians have followed them to Earth and are hunting them down number by number. A curse was set on the children making it that they can only be killed in numeric order.

After finding out that Three was dead Henri and John fled to Ohio, in hope of not being found by the Mogadorians. The plan had been the same everywhere they moved: don’t make friends, don’t go out and don’t draw attention. But as soon as John has his first day at school in Ohio, the whole game has changed. Suddenly John finds that he doesn’t want to blend in and be alone. Could the photographer at school Sarah Hart change his mind about falling in love? Or is it the bully Mark who makes it hard to stay in the shadows? Is it the space geek Sam who won’t make John such a loner? Will these things have horrible consequences for John or will he come to his senses and carry on with what he’s meant to do. John’s decision will change his life and the life of Lorien, for better and for worse.

I enjoyed the book ‘I am Number Four’ written by Pittacus Lore. I thought the plot and storyline of this book were extremely intriguing and there was never a dull moment. I usually dislike Fantasy/ Sci FI books but this novel has surprised me as I thought it was a good book. I thought it was interesting when there were flashbacks to the planet Lorien. The only downside of this novel was the description used. The description about the Mogadorians wasn’t very good and I couldn’t picture what they looked like. I would recommend this book to girls and boys aged 11-16 years old. I would also recommend it to people who enjoy reading Fantasy/ Sci Fi.  I rate ‘I am Number Four’ 4 out of 5 stars.

‘Hush Hush’ by Becca Fitzpatrick

“ His eyes sliced into me and the corners of his mouth tilted up. My heart fumbled a beat and, in that pause, a feeling of gloomy darkness seemed to slide like a shadow over me. It vanished in an instant, but I was still staring at him. His smile wasn’t friendly. It was a smile that spelled trouble. With a promise.”
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Hush hushEverything Nora Grey had ever believed to be made up became a reality when she met Patch Cipriano. At first she believed he was just someone who liked to keep his past just that, the past, something that wasn’t worth bringing up again. But, when she got to know him better she was faced with an uncomfortable realization that perhaps Patch wasn’t the person she had first thought he was. Perhaps she had grown to trust and love the one person she was trying to run from.  After a number of thrilling events and encounters, Nora began to ask herself questions: Who was Patch? Could she trust him? Was there really a guy in a ski mask following her? And the most terrifying question…  Who killed her father?

The beginning of the novel ‘Hush hush’ intrigued me in a way that it became almost impossible to put the book down. The main character that I was drawn to right from the beginning was Patch. This is because even though he was just a teenager in high school, he gave the impression that perhaps there was more to him than he was willing to show.

I believe the characters chosen in this novel were very believable, as they reacted in a way that I believe most teenagers their age would in certain circumstances. For example, Nora who is known as the ‘Good girl’ falls in love with the ‘Bad boy’ Patch.  There were a few moments in the book where I would have enjoyed more action and frightening encounters but over all it was a fantastic book.

Throughout the novel “Hush Hush” I believe the characters grew in bravery, trust and love. This book is the first of four in the series, and with so much that has already happened I can’t wait to read the next three books and see how Nora changes and develops an even further relationship with some of the main characters.

I would rate this a five star book and advise those who enjoyed the Twilight series, or are into romance and fantasy, that this is the book for you!

……

Have you met Nora Grey? She’s just an ordinary girl. Or is she?

Nora is a 16 year old school girl at Coldwater High. Her Dad was murdered so she lives with her mother on the outskirts of Coldwater, in a drafty 18th century farmhouse. Ever since Nora’s Dad has been gone, her mum has been working fulltime and it requires a lot of travelling, so she is hardly at home with her daughter.

One day Nora turns up to her biology class and finds out that her best friend, Vee Sky, was not her partner anymore. Instead she has a new partner. His name is Patch Cipriano. Nora suspects something very weird about Patch. He’s tall, dark, has black eyes and smells of cigars but there’s something about him that Nora wants to find out.

Nora Grey, a girl who didn’t expect romance to be a part of the plan, had her life changed upside down ever since Patch Cipriano arrived. His smile and eyes seemed to see inside her. They draw her to him, lowering her resistance to her better sense.

However, Nora is faced with terrifying events that make it hard to decide whether to fall into Patch’s arms or to keep herself hidden. The truth that Nora finds out will disturb her mind more than thinking about Patch.

“His eyes sliced into me and the corners of his mouth tilted up. My heart fumbled a beat and, in that pause, a feeling of gloomy darkness seemed to slide like a shadow over me. It vanished in an instant, but I was still staring at him. His smile wasn’t friendly. It was a smile that spelled trouble. With a promise.” – (Chapter 1, page 11). From that first moment onwards things were about to change for Nora and the wrong choice will cost her life…

I absolutely loved this book because there is an ongoing mystery throughout the story  yet a cute, romantic relationship building up between the two main characters.

I would recommend this novel to mainly teenage girls who like a hint of romance and mystery because this story will fill you with mixed emotions and hope that the story never ends. I wish that this story could come true! I rate the novel ‘Hush, hush’ a full 5 out of 5 stars.

‘Ship Breaker’ by Paolo Bacigalupi

Ship breakerWhat will Nailor choose? The wealth that he dreamed about throughout his whole life and live with guilt that will haunt him for the rest of his life or save this mysterious person and reunite her with her family and risk his own life?

The plot behind this thrilling book is based in a post apocalyptic world where polar ice caps have melted causing flooding in multiple cities. This story is about a fifteen-year-old boy named Nailor, who lost his mother when he was young and was left to live with his drug addicted and alcoholic father (Richard Lopez) who constantly beats him. These characters live in a post- apocalyptic world where “Oil is Scarce, but friendships more scarce” causing everyone to live in poverty, which left Nailor and his father to work as ship breakers and live on the beach in huts. But one day Nailor’s luck changes when he and Pima, his best friend and co-worker, stumble across a beached clipper. What they find on that ship could change his life emotionally, physically and financially. Nailor has to make a life changing decision by either killing a girl named Nita and stealing her gold or helping her on her journey. Nita grew up in a wealthy family; she is introduced into the story when Nalior and Pima stumble across her beached Clipper.

I personally enjoyed this book, because it has an addictive and thrilling plot that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. It used its themes perfectly by combining post apocalyptic with adventure, love and action; and because of its relatable characters. The character that I was personally able to relate to was Pima. Pima was loved by both of her parents until her father passed away. She was a passionate believer in preferring loyalty to wealth. The characters that have been selected for this book are perfectly used to fit into the plot of this novel.

I would recommend this to both males and females, because it has many themes suited for both genders, such as love, adventure, action and sci-fi. This book is also directed at teenagers due to its themes and its plot that will keep the reader occupied. It is a short novel, which may help keep teenagers interested. I think this book is amazing due to its use of characters, themes and its plot. This is why I think everyone should read it. Even if you never read, you should read this book at least once this year or in your lifetime.

……

Nailer is in a crew that breaks up wrecked ships. Because he is small he is able to access tighter places in the ship. As he works with his crew member Sloth, he falls into a silo of oil. Sloth decides to leave him to die and Nailer ultimately finds his way out and falls into the ocean. He doesn’t get away unharmed because has some metal fragment stuck in his shoulder.

When he reunites with his crew Sloth has to face the penalties of her betrayal and she is thrown off the light crew. That night Nailer and the rest of the crew celebrate his luck and chat about the options they have and the penalties of what Sloth has done. When Nailer returns to his shack to a father high on drugs threatens him so Nailer gives him the rest of the alcohol he had been sharing with his crew on the beach. Eventually they both fall asleep.

In the morning Nailer is woken up by a major storm that has started. Nailer considers leaving his abusive father behind as he escapes to seek higher ground but his conscience gets the better of him.

The book “Ship Breaker” is based in a surreal realm where kids strip down old oil ships taking copper wire and sheets of metal to make money. The main character is Nailer. Nailer finds a sailboat after a enormous storm hits where he lives but what he finds in the boat changes his life forever.

“Ship Breaker” is an electrifying Sci-Fi novel for teenagers aged about 13 – 18. Teenagers can read this novel but the boys would find it more interesting. Paolo Bacigalupi labels these characters and the plot in a way that makes it feel like you are witnessing the plot happen with your own eyes. This novel was immensely different to other novels I have read and this makes it an “out there” book which makes it interesting. I would rate it 9/10 stars because it was a remarkable read and I haven’t read a story like it.

Jack, Year 9

…………

(Welcome to a World Where Oil is Scarce, but Loyalty is Scarcer.)

Nailer is running out of time. He is getting too big for his work, and once he is sent off the crew he will be on his own, left with his drug driven, violent father in a beach shack with no food or supplies. One day a deadly hurricane hits the coast killing three of Nailer’s crew, but did this hurricane also wash up the ‘lucky strike’ he was wishing for?

Are you the kind of reader who takes interest in action-packed, fantasy sagas with a bit of romance? Does this teaser make your reading senses tingle? If so… you must read this compelling story!

The novel is set in a dystopian future (on the Gulf Coast of New Orleans), where oil is a scarce saleable commodity, and stripping grounded oil tankers is the common form of work. 15 year old, Nailer Lopez and his ‘Ship Breaking’ crew work endless, hard hours to make quota, all in the hope of living another day. Long tiring work and little pay mean Nailer and his friends struggle to survive. Due to Nailer’s size, he is tasked with the dangerous job of stripping copper wire from the wrecked ship’s vents. Nailer knows he will soon be too big for his job and his only hope of survival is hitting a lucky strike. When a devastating hurricane leads him to discover an exquisite clipper ship, and its only survivor a young and wealthy girl, Nailer finds himself at a crossroads. Should he continue stripping ships (yet for how much longer?) or save the mysterious girl, Nita, at a great personal risk, yet with the opportunity to live a life of adventure and wealth.

I really enjoyed the story ‘Ship Breaker’, because of its engaging and bizarre plot, mysterious characters, and Paolo’s brilliant way of describing and expressing the character’s deepest thoughts. After a confusing and intense beginning, the story and its characters started to evolve. This thrilling fantasy novel quickly became impossible to put down. With suspense carried from page to page, each answer brought two new questions. This book also effectively tackles themes that teenagers struggle with each day, such as loyalty, family, violence and greed, which makes it easy for readers my age to relate to.

I would recommend this book to capable readers from the ages of 12 to 20 who are interested in action-packed Sci-Fi, romantic, and mysterious novels. I truly enjoyed reading this story and it’s easy to see why it was a 2010 National Book Award Finalist. I rate ‘Ship Breaker’ by Paolo Bacigalupi – five out of five stars.

Where will you be when the world draws to a close? Living in a luxury mansion with five-star housing, famous, rich? Or will you be like Nailer, who spends his life crawling through passages and gaps in old ships and tankers to try and feed his team so they can survive another day? Why does he do this, and who is exactly is Nailer? Find out all your answers to this book here.

Meet your main character Nailer Lopez. Nailer’s job is to climb and crawl around and through old, dead tankers and ships. He does this to find old copper wire, and they use this copper wire to fill up their allowance so they can get the money to eat and survive another day on this world. Nailer has had to collect copper wire since he was twelve years old. Nailer and his team are set in south-eastern United States. The wire Nailer and his team collect go toward a large company that controls commerce around the world. Nailer lives a very hard life; his father Richard Lopez is a dangerous drug abuser. He hasn’t been the greatest father to Nailer. Even though his father viciously beats him, Nailer still respects him and loves him.

Nailer’s biggest dream is to work on a large clipper ship which sails the ocean, and coincidentally, a huge storm hits their area and one of these large clipper ships ends up beached. Nailer takes advantage of this and gets his crew member Pima to go and scavenge the boat before someone else beats them to it. But not only do they find what they are looking for, there is something, far far bigger on that boat, and it could cost them life or death. This something changes your perspective on this book. What could this something be?

I really enjoyed reading Ship Breaker. This is because of the genre of the book. This book is an action packed, gory, violent kind of book, but it also holds quite a deep background to it as well, which is why I enjoy it, and it is quite a popular book from this because a back-story to a book makes it more interesting.

I would recommend this book to girls and boys that are into quite a deep, and dark book, one that has interesting perks but is also quite violent. Boys and girls, ages 12-16, I highly recommend this book to.

‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins

Hunger Games - may the odds be ever in your favor.Would you volunteer to take part in a fight to the death in your sister’s place? Katniss Everdeen, a young girl from District Twelve, has had no choice but to do so. Set in a not so distant future, North America now known as Panem has been split into twelve districts each run by the Capitol. Each year, a boy and a girl tribute aged from 12-18 is reaped and takes part in the annual Hunger Games, a punishment for a past rebellion. Losing means death, winning means fame and fortune.

Katniss Everdeen lives with her sister, Primrose, and her mother in District Twelve, the mining district. Her father died in an explosion, causing Katniss to have to hunt and provide for her family on her own. Everything was peaceful until the 74th reaping of the Hunger Games. Prim is chosen and Katniss, in an attempt to save her sister, takes her place. Little did she know that she would be fighting the boy who saved her life, and start a rebellion at the same time.

I loved reading this book because every chapter ends on a cliffhanger and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. The description of characters throughout the book is very detailed and gives you a good idea of how they look. The ending is quite sudden and draws you into reading the rest of the trilogy.

I recommend this book to young adults between the ages of 12-17 who like stories of love, rebellion, and standing up for what you believe in. This book is the start of a brilliant trilogy. I rate ‘The Hunger Games’ 5 out of 5 stars.

The Dark Days. That is what gave us the Hunger Games and the time has come for another game. You are chosen at the reaping, where they choose one girl and one boy they call them ‘tributes’ from each district. There were thirteen before the war but now only twelve with The Capitol owning all. These 24 tributes go into a battle to the death. Only one goes home. This person is called the victor. If you like the sound of that, this is the book for you: ‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins.

The story is set in the future area of North America, now called Panem after the war. The focus is on Panem, its twelve districts and the capital, which is where the games are set. The Capitol is for the rich and they have control of all the districts, who get poorer and poorer,  which is so for District 12. Katniss Everdeen from District 12 is now in the hunger games, a battle to the death, a live TV show where 24 people go in and one comes out. Katniss Everdeen is beautiful everyday girl, who hunts for her family’s food and wellbeing. Yet she must go into the Hunger Games.

I really enjoyed this book because it is about a 16 year old girl who lives in District 12 which is a poor mining district. Her world gets changed around when she decided to go into the hunger games in her sister’s place, to fight to the death against 23 others. Allies will be formed. Will love be found? Will she survive the hunger games?

I recommend this to teens and young adults, as it is a thrilling wonder/fantasy book. I rate this book 4 stars out of 5 because I felt it was missing some stuff, such as more love more fights or more conflict. I found this in the first novel of ‘The Hunger Games’ series, but I found this more in the second book ‘The Hunger Games Catching Fire’. Alana, Year 9

‘Maximum Ride’ by James Patterson

Maximum RideMeet Max, an innocent young 14 year old girl, living in the shadows of her enemies. No parents. No grandparents. Just her, and her unrelated ‘Flock’ she lives with. Max and all the members of her ‘Flock’ – Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman and Angel are just like normal teenagers living a normal life, except, they all have a secret… they all have wings and can fly! Does this sound like the book you would want to read? Then of course this is the book for you!

Things are quite normal in this so called ‘Flock’ Max belongs to, but of course there is always a bad side to things. They are being hunted down by the wolf/human mutants they call ‘Erasers’. They have to now live under cover and protect themselves because anyone could be a traitor.

I was glued to this book from start to finish by the way that James Patterson described the characters and by how he made it look like we could interact with them throughout the book. The pictures and descriptive language used in the book made it easy to understand and visualise all the scenes in my imagination as though I was there. The story continued fantastically with enough mystery and wonder to keep my full attention.

I recommend this book to people aged 12-16 and in between if you like the mysterious and wonder type of book with a full on twist at the end, then of course this is the book for you. If you really enjoyed this book, then I recommend the rest of the ‘Maximum Ride’ series and the rest of the James Patterson collection. I’d rate this graphic novel ‘Maximum Ride’ a 4.5 out of 5.

Maximum Ride Vol.1

Fourteen year-old Maximum Ride, better known as Max, knows what it’s like to soar above the world. She and all the members of the “flock” (Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman and Angel) are just like ordinary kids but with extraordinary powers: they have wings and can fly. It my seem like a dream until the youngest out of the folk is kidnapped and taken back to where everything began, a place they like to call ‘The School’. The school, the place were everything started, is a laboratory full of scientists and test subjects. Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman and Angel are just six extraordinary kids and after many years of being experimented on, they are all now prepared to take revenge. After the youngest, Angel, is kidnapped by erasers, they go on a life-threatening quest to find her and discover new secrets.

Maximum Ride, as you may already notice, is the lead character in the book. This book shows that Max is very loving and mature for a 14 year-old girl who is looking after her family, ‘The Folk’. When Angel gets kidnapped, she doesn’t hesitate to go after them and fight back for she is always the first one to pull her wings out to rise up in the sky and take the chance.

The categories in this book are Thrill, Heart-filled, Adventure and Fantasy. I liked this book a lot for there was always something different about to happen which kept me on my toes and wanting to know more. I would recommend this book for high school ages. This is a very easy read and has great imagery.

By  Jordan G, Year 9

……

Don’t you wish you had wings? To fly, high in the sky with the wind in your hair, to have the feeling of complete freedom? Wouldn’t living a life with wings be glorious? Well for Max and her flock, having wings was what put them all in danger. Max, a 14 year old girl and the oldest of her winged family of six, lived high in the mountain range, hiding from all those who wish to harm them. One bright, peaceful morning, the six of them went out into the field to pick fresh strawberries but the peace did not last long. Ari and his Erasers attacked the flock and kidnapped the youngest, Angel. Now Max, Fang and Nudge leave to travel far distances to find Angel and bring her home safely. Iggy and Gazzy are left at home where they are meant to be safe but end up getting themselves into a lot of mischief with the Erasers. What will happen to Iggy and Gazzy? Will Max, Fang and Nudge find Angel? Or will it be too late?

I enjoyed reading this book because I enjoy the fantasy genre and I am able to relate to the strong family bond they have. None of them are related by blood yet they still look out for each other and care about each other as if they were blood related. I rate this book 4 out of five stars and I recommend it to people between the ages of 11 to 18 who enjoy reading a fantasy genre.

‘Hush, Hush’ by Becca Fitzpatrick

Hush hush‘ A fallen angel…. A forbidden love’

Nora Grey moved to the outskirts of Coldwater, into the only house on Hawthorn Lane, not expecting her life to be drastically meddled with.  She started school at Coldwater High, only to meet a strange, mysterious boy, an exchange student called Patch Cipranio, who seems to be overly interested in who she is. Patch has brought mystery and romance into Nora’s life as well as his darkened past.

Nora tries to figure out Patch’s past, only to notice two scars on his back. She questions his mortality until he lets her into his past by allowing her to witness everything he went through, everything he is. She finds his secret: he is a fallen angel. There has to be a reason why Patch is here, and Nora has so many theories. To kill her? Or to protect her? If Patch is trying to protect Nora, from whom is he trying to protect her?

Nora doesn’t know whether she should run from him, or fall for him; the wrong decision could cost her life.

As an unexpected series of events occur, one of the final scenes answers the question: Who is the guy in the ski mask that has been repeatedly trying to attack her? Luckily she has her best friend, Vee, by her side to help her through her confusion. So many close calls cause Nora’s mother to wonder, but Nora can’t open up to her because she doesn’t want to move or for her Mum to get worried.

I would recommend this book to teenagers or young adults who enjoy fantasy romance books such as the Twilight series. I enjoyed this book because of the gripping plot twist and unexpected ending. Hush, Hush is an amazing book that will keep you intrigued the whole time.

“My heart fumbled a beat and, in that pause, a feeling of gloomy darkness seemed to slide like a shadow over me.”

In Coldwater, Maine, life for Nora Grey wasn’t exciting in her quiet hometown, which is until exchange student; Patch Ciprano arrives, causing Nora’s life to change forever. Patch Ciprano, Nora’s new Biology partner, has moved to Coldwater and has brought his unilluminated past with him. Although dark and mysterious, Nora seems to think there is more to Patch than meets the eye. Questioning his past, two scars on his back may be the only thing between the living and the fallen. Other problems arise when a mysterious man in a ski mask follows her, costing the lives of her and the ones around her.

This book has multiple twists and turns and will keep you on edge the entire time. Each character has their own unique personality that really helps make this book far greater than the story line. The genre of this novel is romance, mystery, supernatural and fantasy, and will be perfect for people who enjoyed the Twilight series. This book is angled at teenagers and young adults. Although this is not my kind of book, Becca Fitzpatrick has written a fairly good book and the first of the ‘Hush Hush’ series. I would rate it 3½ out of 5 stars.

Fiction becomes fact for Nora Grey when Patch Cipriano enters her life. After having awkward encounters with him, she starts to second-guess her reality. Having no idea of Patch’s past she gives in to his flirty attitude and mysterious personality, despite the fact that he knows everything about her, including her secrets, and she knows nothing about him.

From the beginning of her biology class Nora knew that Patch kept a grave secret locked away with him. By his devilish smile, charming looks and chilling stare, Nora was certain that whatever her efforts, he wasn’t going to give in, until they both get stuck at a dusty old motel and all of Nora’s suspicions about fallen angels come true. From that moment on, Patch ‘s life gets intertwined with Nora’s and secrets from the past start to take over Nora’s already complicated teenage life. Every time an issue seems to get resolved a new one emerges.

Unanswerable questions circle Nora, taking her deeper into a world where love, friendship and trust matter more than anything. Not knowing where to go, except to her, only best friend Vee, who seems to have everything in her life under control, Nora uses Vee’s help.

However when Nora finds out that her new psychologist is on a mission to kill her, the only person she can turn to is Patch. Will Patch and Nora win the fight? Will they ever be together? These are just some of the questions that will make you want to read more.

Hush Hush, is a very creative book and is certainly well written. I would recommend this to all teenagers who enjoy reading romantic fantasy novels. Once you start reading you won’t be able to put it down because your mind will be glued to the pages. I would definitely rate a 5 star read because of the fascinating storyline and perfect chemistry between Patch and Nora.

‘The Adoration of Jenna Fox’ by Mary E. Pearson

Jenna Fox     You wake up, you don’t know who you are, where you are and you don’t recognise anyone. It probably won’t happen to you but this is the scenario that Jenna Fox faces. It takes place in a California of the future where we meet Jenna, her Mum, her Grandma, her neighbour and her two friends, who are all being very secretive and strict on Jenna. She is told that she was in a coma for one year as a result of a car accident and when she wakes up

she can’t remember a thing. Her family is showing her old home movies in the hope she will remember something. As she starts to remember, she wants to know more but she doesn’t get to know.

I enjoyed the book because it kept me intrigued during the surprising twists, clever language and the perfect amount of suspense. I also like how we are thrown into the book, only knowing as much as Jenna Fox and we follow her story all the way to the end, learning when she learns, fearing when she fears and celebrating when she celebrates. I would recommend this book to teenage girls who like sci-fi/fantasy novels as this story follows the life of a teenage girl who is just like you or I, only one car accident tipped her life upside down, just like it could tip one of our lives upside down.

I rate “The Adoration of Jenna Fox” 4 out of 5.

Imagine if one day you were having a great time, hanging out with your friends, and a year and a half later you wake up and can’t remember any of it. This is the life that Jenna Fox has just faced, after experiencing a near-fatal car accident.

When reading this book you are thrown into the life of Jenna where we know only as much as she does. Her journey begins as she starts to live a new life. In this book we meet her mum, her grandma, a neighbour and two friends. Her family shows her old home videos to try and get her to remember things, but she can’t. They are very strict on her and won’t tell her any secrets or facts about the accident. Jenna doesn’t think it’s fair that she isn’t being told everything. She meets her neighbour, and finds out the secrets that her family have hidden from her and the truth about who she was, is now and will be in the future. Her mind is now bursting with more questions than ever. The only thing is that nobody will answer them.

I really enjoyed ‘The Adoration Of Jenna Fox’, by Mary E Pearson, because it is an exciting book that keeps you intrigued throughout, with new challenges, experiences and twists coming all the time. Whenever Jenna is excited, we are excited and when she is sad or fears bad luck, we do too. I would recommend this book to teenage girls who are willing to go though an exciting journey of someone’s life till they find out who they really are and how they became that way.

‘Eighth grade Bites’ by Heather Brewer

eighth grade bites“The world is full of monsters with friendly faces.”

If you like books that get you on the edge of your seat  wanting to read more and more then Eighth Grade Bites is a book for you.

Eighth Grade Bites was set in a small little town, with a small little family, but this wasn’t an ordinary family. It was a vampire family.

The main character in this book is Vladimir Tod. Vlad’s dad is a vampire that married a non-vampire. At the start of the book, Vlad’s parents got caught in a house fire and died. So Vlad’s mother’s best friend Nelly looked after him ever since the fire. She looked after him as if he was her own son. Nelly works in a hospital, and this is how Vlad retrieves his food, which is blood, because otherwise Vlad will have to kill people to retrieve his food. Vlad is a typical eighth grader; tall, thin, black hair, pale, and many would describe him as ‘goth’. At school Vlad would get bullied because of the way he looked. No one really liked him except for his English teacher Mr Craig and his best friend Henry.

This book was a good read. It grabbed my attention because at the start it went straight into a fighting scene. I also liked this fantasy book because it was an easy book to read. I would probably recommend this book for ages 12 to 15 years of age because it is based in the eighth grade and it’s an easy book to read and it’s full of fantasy and thrills.

Max, Year 8

————————————————————

Life is not easy for Vladimir Tod. His mother was a human and his father was a vampire, and they were both killed in a fire. The school bullies harass Vlad and he struggles to get the girl he’s had a crush on since second grade. Vlad’s thirst for blood is satisfied when his Aunt Nelly brings him outdated blood bags from the hospital where she works.

The book takes place in a small town named Bathory. Vlad’s Aunt Nelly is raising him, and she understands his problems and helps him to hide the fact that he is a vampire. Vlad’s best friend, Henry, is the only other person who knows his secret. Vladimir’s favorite teacher has disappeared and no one knows where he is. Vlad and Henry are determined to find out what happened to him, but the substitute teacher begins to question Vlad too closely, and there is just something strange about Mr. Otis. What will Vlad do? What does Mr. Otis want?

This book was a great read and grabbed from the start of the first chapter. I would recommend it to anyone aged 13 to 16 years of age that enjoys a good book about vampires.
